Common Carrier Accidental Death Benefit
Common Carrier Accidental Death Benefit
Benefit Description

Foresters may provide a grant in the event of the death of an eligible member resulting from, and independent of all other causes, an accident involving a public conveyance vehicle or aircraft, that occurs while he/she is boarding, riding, or alighting from that vehicle or aircraft, as a fare-paying passenger (not as a pilot, driver, operator, or member of the crew). This includes death whether during or after, exposure to the elements following the disappearance, forced landing, stranding, sinking or wrecking of the vehicle or aircraft.

The amount of the grant is $100,000 due to the death of the eligible member, except if eligibility is based on the holding of a social fraternal membership or a Foresters life insurance certificate, the amount of the grant is:

  • $50,000 for the death of the spouse of the holder
  • $25,000 for the death of a child of the holder

The total grant for the death of the holder and spouse will not exceed $150,000.

If the total grants claimed as a result of one accident exceed $1,000,000, the grant amounts shown above will be reduced so that the total of all payments from this one accident is not greater than $1,000,000.

Eligibility requirements and limitations
  • The social fraternal membership, Foresters life insurance certificate or non-Foresters life insurance product upon which eligibility is based must be inforce on the date of death.
  • Death must occur within 365 days of the accident.
  • At the time of the accident:
    • The vehicle or aircraft must have a current and valid certificate of air, road, sea, or rail worthiness
    • Be piloted, driven or captained by a person who holds a valid and current certificate of competency of a rating authorizing him/her to pilot, drive, or captain such a vehicle or aircraft
    • The vehicle or aircraft was being used and has customarily been used for the sole purpose of transporting fare-paying passengers
  • An application for this grant must be accompanied by a copy of the death certificate and information about the accident, the vehicle or aircraft and its owner and operator.
