Orphan Member Benefit and Scholarship
Benefit Description
Upon the death of one or both Parent(s), the Orphan Member Benefit may
provide:

A monthly allowance for an orphaned child is payable to their legal guardian
-
A scholarship for the orphan to continue his/her education
Orphan and orphaned child are defined as:
-
A child of Parents who are deceased and the last surviving Parent had become an
eligible member during the lifetime of both Parents and that last surviving
Parent was also an eligible member at the time of his/her death, or
-
A junior member whose certificate insuring his/her life, as the primary
insured, was issued during the lifetime of both of his/her Parents
- A child whose Parent is deceased.

If, in the opinion of Foresters, based on the recommendation of the Medical
Director, the orphan child is incapable due to severe learning disabilities to
engage in any occupation or gainful employment, he/she will continue to be
eligible for this member benefit until the end of this incapacity or upon
reaching age 25, whichever occurs first.
Eligibility requirements and limitations

Application for the monthly allowance must be made within 12 months of the last
surviving Parent’s death and must contain the information required by
Foresters, including:

Copies of the death certificates of both Parents
-
Copies of the birth certificate of each child showing both Parents’ names
-
Letters of guardianship issued by a court of law naming the legally-appointed
guardian for the orphaned child
of the Parent’s death.
- When eligibility is based on a Social Fraternal Membership, it must have been
inforce for a continuous period of two years immediately prior to the date
of the Parent’s death.

Foresters may, at its sole discretion on the basis of documentary evidence
(e.g. Court Declaration) submitted in support of the application, deem the
child an orphan for the purpose of this member benefit.

The grant becomes effective the month following the date of becoming an orphan
if an application is made for this benefit within 12 months from that date. If
it is not made within that 12-month period, it will be effective six months
prior to the date the application was received by Foresters.

This member benefit will end if, before reaching age 18, the orphan:
-
Marries or becomes self-supporting
-
Is no longer a full-time high school student
- Is approved for the Foresters Orphan Scholarship member benefit, described below
- The benefit will be paid in the currency of the country where the certificate was purchased.
Orphan Scholarship member benefit
If an orphan is accepted to enter an accredited postsecondary educational
institution offering a degree or approved occupational diploma program, he/she
may qualify for a scholarship of up to $6,000 a year for a maximum of four (4)
years. The total amount of the orphan scholarship grant will not exceed
$24,000.
Eligibility requirements and limitations

The program must be full-time, meaning at least 2 years in duration, not including co-op time.
- The full-time post-secondary educational program must be from an American, Canadian or British educational institution that has recognized degree/diploma-granting powers, excluding university preparatory programs (e.g., CEGEP/pre-university diploma)

The duration of the scholarship and the amount of assistance will be at the
sole discretion of Foresters.

The scholarship will end and no further payments will be made if, at any time,
the child is no longer in good academic standing, as defined by the educational institution, or the child does not attend full-time.

If the child becomes orphaned at age 18 or younger, the program must begin in
the calendar year in which the child’s high school education is completed.

If the child becomes orphaned after age 18 and prior to reaching age 24, he/she
must already be attending a program.

The scholarship benefit is not available to a child who becomes orphaned after
reaching age 24.

The scholarship will not be granted for evening or part-time studies, or where
the orphan is taking a program that will be reimbursed from another source(s).

Upon completion of the approved program, the scholarship will end.
- The 4 year scholarship is applicable only to a first post-secondary degree or diploma program.
- The benefit will be paid in the currency of the country where the certificate was purchased.
- When eligibility is based on a Social Fraternal Membership, it must have been
inforce for a continuous period of two years immediately prior to the date
of the Parent’s death.
